Open Burning Information

Open burning of yard waste is limited to the period beginning September 15 and ending April14 of each year. St Louis County Air Pollution regulations allow burning of yard waste if the property size is equal to or greater than 3 acres, except where the property shares a boundary with the Meramec or Mississippi rivers there is no minimum property size.
Painted, creosoted, wolmanized or otherwise treated wood must NOT be used to fuel the fire.
Open burning CANNOT be used as disposal of household waste/refuse disposal.
Burning must not exceed a base area of four (4) feet by four (4) feet.
Burning may take place between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. only.

A fire will not be allowed if the winds are 15 miles per hour or greater.

There must be a means of fire extinguishment on site and readily available.
Open burning must be supervised by an adult at all times.
The fire must be fully extinguished before leaving.
Open burning that will be offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor emissions when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous shall be prohibited.
The location of burning shall not be less than 50 feet from any structure.
All open burning activities throughout the County, in unincorporated and incorporated portions of the County, are prohibited except where allowed by St. Louis County Code 612.345
If smoke, ash or particulate matter from an open burn remains visible beyond the property line of origin, or found on surfaces beyond the property line of origin, this may be a violation of the Missouri Air Pollution Control Rule, 10CSR 10-6.170 – Restriction of Particulate Matter to the Ambient Air Beyond the Premises of Origin.  Such an occurrence could result in issuance of a Notice of Violation from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.  Any violation of the Missouri Air Pollution Control Rules could also result in a fine from the State of Missouri.
